An Awards for All grant is helping a Northern Ireland wide group provide support to multiple birth families
Tamba Twins and Multiple Births Association, a group providing support and information for families with twins, triplets and more throughout Northern Ireland, was been awarded a grant of £9,285 from the Awards for All programme.
The group used the money to hold a series of family events, produce a newsletter and organise a regional conference.
Acting Coordinator, Marilyn Yorke, said: “We are the only project in Northern Ireland that is providing support for families with multiple births. Figures show that 13.71% of every 1,000 births in Northern Ireland are multiple births – proof that the services we offer are vitally important.
“TAMBA have helped so many families deal with multiple births - something that can be a scary, daunting experience for many parents. Following the birth we continue to offer families emotional support, financial guidance, and the chance to meet people in a similar situation.”
The support offered by the group has proved invaluable for Valerie McCann, from Portadown, who gave birth to triplet boys William, Tom and James in 2002. “When I found out I was having triplets I started to stress and panic. TAMBA offered me important advice and support and helped put my mind at ease,” said Valerie.
“TAMBA opened up so many opportunities for our whole family following their birth. We go along to events where we can mix and speak with other parents who are in a similar position. You feel you are not alone and other people have managed to cope.”
