"The Splashwalk as an enormous success: it has created great excitement among visitors and opens up areas of the Wetland Demonstration Site that were not accessible before"

Alan Bruford, education ranger

Tale Valley Trust has built a Splashwalk, generating disabled access to swampy areas

The Tale Valley is one of the most beautiful parts of east Devon, with the river Otter running through it. The Tale Valley Trust is working to protect and improve this environment for the benefit of local communities.

The Trust realised that people, especially children, enjoyed walking through the natural wetland but disabled people and families with pushchairs could not get across the ‘swampy’. So they had the idea of the Splashwalk.

The boardwalk has been flooded in places with swamp water, a couple of inches high, allowing everyone to follow the trail and enjoy the full wetland experience.

The Splashwalk has proved to be very popular. Parents, children and even grandmothers have been taking off their shoes and socks and paddling through the water with great enthusiasm. One small child’s comment while dipping her feet in the water: "This is so cool!"
